The Accountant 2
The 2016 Ben Affleck vehicle, The Accountant, was one of those fine if somewhat forgettable action flicks which came and went pretty fast. It had some highlights, such as Affleck and Jon Bernthal's performances and the climatic shootout, but is one I struggle to remember much today. Somehow, nearly ten years later, The Accountant 2 was greenlit and released in 2025 but quickly found its way to streaming. Was this one to skip, like the deluge of content available at the push of a button, or is it worth your time?
The story here sees Affleck's Christian Wolff on the trail for a murdered former director of Financial Crimes Enforcement Network who had been poking around an old case involving a missing Salvadorian family. And it's not long before he gets caught in the dangerous world of human trafficking but with little options for back-up, he must call on his estranged and highly lethal brother for support in order to put wrongs to right.
Director of the first film, Gavin O'Connor, has created a very watchable and entertaining action thriller which moves along nicely with his two leads acting on fine form. The charisma between Affleck and Bernthal gets a lot more screentime and it's these scenes that make the film work. If you were to remove them, there is still a competent action thriller but their presence is what elevates this above much of the fodder found in streaming catalogues.
Fans of the original will find plenty to enjoy and newcomers won't feel too left out in the cold if they start here. The Accountant 2 offers some entertaining action moments, great chemistry from the leads and has a couple of nice moments of levity that kept me entertained. It won't win any awards for originality but is still one I can recommend even if it will be a hazy one to recall in 9 years time.
