Succession season 4

I started the first season of HBO's excellent show, Succession, late and so it would seem fitting that I accidentally do the same with the fourth and final season that concluded in 2023. This has been a series that has brought exceptionally talented writers, directors and actors all together, and delivered something special for five years. There have been imitators but nothing has quite come close to achieving what the showrunners forged here and, thankfully, they knew when it was time to bring about the conclusion.

The fourth season continues the vicious power struggle between Ken, Shiv and Roman while their father, Logan, makes plans for the future of his company which might not be to everyone's liking. Will he sell the business and how will an upcoming presidential election affect the plans of Logan's children?

There is so much to unpack throughout all four seasons and I think that is testament to how Succession does not waste time with any filler. Every narrative is carefully constructed with precision to account for previous events and eagle-eyed viewers will be sure to catch many references and jokes that flew over my head on a single viewing. The story moves fast and demands full attention, which is refreshing in an age when shows serve as mere content for background fodder while viewers check their phones. And that's not a dig at anyone as I was guilty of this and had to hit the rewind more than a few times.

Season four is over a year old by now but I want to avoid spoilers as this really was a thrilling ride offering a great drama that knows how to be funny at the same time in the right moments without resorting to cheap gags. The entire cast never miss a beat and it all culminates perfectly in the final episode, which makes full use of its extended running time.

I'm not sure what show will fill the void for HBO left by this and I would have happily watched a fifth season but I am glad Jesse Armstrong was able to end this when he felt it appropriate. So many shows are dragged out and tampered with by studios but Succession is that rare example of a show that delivers without outstaying its welcome. I'm very glad I watched this and can highly recommend it.
