Mr. Robot season one

Chances are you will have heard of this. Mr. Robot or in other words; Amazon's big new series that started in 2015. Unsure whether I'd get my use out of Amazon's expensive fees, it recently aired on Universal much to my delight as I was keen to see what this moody looking series was about, but is it right for you?

Having already been commissioned for a third series, it's safe to say that Mr. Robot has been a surprise success with audiences, critics and at the awards. The story itself revolves around a quiet, young individual by the name of Elliot (Rami Malek) who works in data security and is a bit of a whizz, hacking anyone from cafe owners to his closest friends however few they may be. And after a snappy yet uncharacteristic opening, that felt more like the hook to grab audiences, he is soon approached by a disheveled person (Christian Slater) with big plans that involve hacking an even bigger company. Without spoilers, this forms the main core of the story and creator Sam Esmail crafts a truly gripping experience.

Shot in digital, Mr. Robot is a visually arresting show that reminded me of David Fincher's work. Every scene has been carefully approached to ensure each environment feels different from the last while combining an almost retro 1980s/90s vibe, which feels appropriate given Slater's casting. But the cast in front of the screen are equally talented too with Malek standing out in a career-defining role that the show relies heavily upon. It's also great to see the ever charismatic Christian Slater take a break from 'straight-to-DVD' (has that become outdated?) flicks and take a role worthy of his talents.

Unlike some shows that I've seen of late that lull and drag forever to hit a certain number of episodes, Mr. Robot never once faltered for me. Every episode offered something new and only added to the development of the story. If you are looking for something chilling, tense, creative or just a bit different from the rest, this show is well worth your time. Now just a matter of time waiting for Universal to air season two.
