John Wick
Among the films I've written about, I do enjoy the straight-forward action flick from time to time. Some do fair better than others with many trying to recapture the glory days of the 1980s and failing miserably, such as Sabotage which I saw last year. But then there are the odd exceptions from time to time that somehow manage to hit all the right notes and 2014's John Wick does just that.
Set in an alternative universe of sorts where there are secret hotels for assassins with codes of honour, John Wick quickly establishes its semi-comic book tone but wisely paces itself throughout the 100 minute running-time. The story follows a retired hitman whose wife passes away and then a group of thugs murder his dog which sets him on a path of revenge. It's simple but director/stuntman Chad Stahelski finds creative ways to develop the story before the action starts making it all the more exciting.
Unlike other action flicks that have tried and failed, John Wick keeps each set-piece different from the last and it is a blast to watch. The nightclub sequence is a particular standout with smooth camerawork and editing that made it look all the more impressive. But the real standout is Keanu Reeves himself who is on fine form and gives the film its cold, revenge driven heart. With that said, it's not a drab film and the screenplay is inventive enough to keep the entertainment levels high.
Some might say that the climax should have been bigger but I was more than satisfied and it made sense given the journey John Wick chooses. It's a lot of fun to watch and I look forward to seeing what the well received sequel has to offer.
